What is Petcoke?
Cocking
is reckoned as a thermal cracking procedure having long residence time
along with the manufacturing of petroleum coke (Petcoke), which is a
heavy carbon remainder. Petcoke is formed by thermal cracking of vacuum
residue produced from crude oil.
In a
petroleum processing plant, vacuum and atmospheric distillation
processes eliminate from the crude oil that boil up to 500oC. The
distillation process eradicates the lighter fraction of the crude oil
into divisions that are then formed into useful refined items like
petrol, LPG, kerosene, diesel, etc. The fraction of the crude oil that
does not boil during the refining process even under vacuum is vacuum
residue. It is comprised of heavy, complex and viscous hydrocarbon
molecules.
The
coking procedure transforms the vacuum residue into solid, liquid and
gas products. After some time, the heavy feedstock is heated and pumped
to insulated drums where the large molecules are divided into smaller
molecules, liquid products, producing gas, and coke. As coke develops in
the drum, the light in weight products are recovered as vapours. They
are taken for separation to fractionators into different products.
Petcoke yield is dependent on the carbon substance of the feedstock, whereas the structural quality is influenced by the feed type. Fuel grade Petcoke is formed from vacuum residues having high sulfur contents. High Sulphur Petcoke is utilized as fuel and low sulphur Petocoke is in producing anodes.
